Experience

Dr John Hsiang is a gastroenterologist at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore.

His clinic interests are in gastrointestinal diseases, fatty liver disease and viral hepatitis.

Prior to joining private practice, he was a consultant gastroenterologist at SingHealth cluster hospitals.

He graduated from Otago Medical School, New Zealand and then completed his specialist training and obtained the fellowship of Royal Australasian College of Physicians. He furthered his research career and post-specialist training at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and obtained a doctorate degree in hepatology research on the topic of chronic liver diseases, with a focus on hepatitis B, type 2 diabetes and statins.

Besides his clinical work, Dr Hsiang teaches at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS) and Duke-NUS Medical School. He has also held the position of adjunct associate professor at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Duke-NUS Medical School.

He has extensive research experience and has published over 25 peer-reviewed studies on a variety of topics including hepatitis B and C, obesity-related liver disease, colonoscopy, gut microbiome, liver cirrhosis, helicobacter infection and alcoholic liver disease. Previously, he was awarded research grants on gastroenterology and hepatology.

Dr Hsiang has been a reviewer for several international gastroenterology and hepatology journals including the American Journal of Gastroenterology, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics journals. He is also a junior editorial board member of the Hepatoma Research journal and a member of the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease.

He is a recipient of the SingHealth Long Service Award. He has been practising medicine for over 15 years.
