Experience

Dr John Chia is a medical oncologist at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore.

His subspeciality interests include ovarian, endometrial, cervical, breast and colorectal cancers, as well as the management of rare tumours such as melanoma, uterine sarcomas and germ cell tumours.

He was the former chief of the gynaecology oncology service in the division of medical oncology at the National Cancer Centre Singapore.

Dr Chia graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and obtained his membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, UK. Early in his career, he was engaged in immunotherapy for solid cancers and was involved with the leadership or development of several immunotherapy clinical trials in Singapore. He undertook fellowship training in immunotherapy for solid tumours, particularly in the development of dendritic cancer vaccines, adoptive T-cell therapy and immune biomarker monitoring for cancers. He then completed a second fellowship at The Royal Marsden Hospital, UK in the advanced management of gynaecological cancers. He has more than 20 years of experience practising medicine.

Besides his clinical work, he is also active in clinical trial research, and has developed numerous research protocols and trials for ovarian, cervical, colorectal, nasopharyngeal and breast cancer. He has published widely in leading international journals, and holds numerous local and international research grants for research in immune checkpoint inhibitors, cancer vaccines, T-cell therapy, aspirin chemoprevention and small molecule inhibitors for cancer.

Dr Chia is the vice-president and founding board member of the Gynaecologic Cancer Group Singapore, and an adjunct associate professor at DUKE-NUS Medical School. He lectures widely, including in Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, China and UK, as well as plenary symposia lectures in Germany, Australia and ESMO Asia. Locally, he helped write the Singapore ovarian and uterine cancer management guidelines.

He is exco member of the Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital medical board and the ex-chair of its neoplasia committee. He is a member of the Parkway independent ethics committee, which oversees the review and approval of clinical trials and recruiting patients for novel therapies in the hospital’s system.
