Experience
Dr Desmond Quek is ophthalmologist at Mount Elizabeth Hospitals, Singapore.
He specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma, cataracts, refractive errors (myopia, astigmatism and presbyopia), as well as general ophthalmological conditions such as diabetic eye disease, age-related macular degeneration and dry eyes.
Prior to joining private practice, Dr Quek held several leadership positions at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) including chief resident, chief registrar, director of medical informatics, chair of IT committee, and director of strategy and resource management.
He graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS). He went on to complete his residency in ophthalmology at SNEC under the Ministry of Health postgraduate scholarship, and was appointed a member and fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK and a fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. He then underwent subspecialty fellowship training in glaucoma at SNEC, before pursuing an executive master’s degree in business administration at INSEAD.
Dr Quek was involved in research as a principal investigator in multiple research trials, including the association of obstructive sleep apnoea with glaucoma, the Asia tube-vs-trabeculectomy surgical trial, and the delivery of sustained-release eye pressure lowering medication via a microstent injection. He is the first author of numerous scientific journal articles and has given multiple research presentations at international eye conferences.
He is a recipient of several awards including the Singapore Health Quality Service Awards and the National Health IT Excellence Award.
