Experience
Dr James Wee is an orthopaedic surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore.
His subspecialty is in hip and knee surgery (joint replacement and sports) and foot and ankle surgery. He is experienced in limb lengthening and reconstruction surgery, computer-assisted navigation and robot-assisted total knee replacement, and complex revision knee and hip replacement surgery.
He was the former director of a limb lengthening and reconstruction service, and treated complex cases involving short limbs, congenital deformities and complex trauma. He was also a former consultant at the adult reconstruction service and foot and ankle service at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), and continues to be a visiting consultant there.
Dr Wee obtained his bachelor’s degree at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK. He is a dual fellowship-trained surgeon in the subspecialties of hip and knee surgery and foot and ankle surgery. He was awarded a scholarship to complete his fellowship in hip and knee surgery at Oxford University Hospitals in the UK, where he acquired expertise in complex revision total hip replacement and total knee replacement surgery.
He underwent training in partial knee replacement with renowned inventor-surgeons of the Oxford partial knee system. He is one of the highest-volume surgeons in the Oxford partial knee replacement system locally.
He also completed a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London, which is the UK's top specialist orthopaedic hospital that manages complex cases from across the nation. He is skilled in treating sports injuries and degenerative conditions, complex trauma and nerve problems, and is experienced in keyhole and minimally invasive surgery, including treating ankle sprains and bunions.
He was the lead surgeon of the team performing the earliest bilateral (both-sided) MAKO robotic total hip replacements through the posterior approach in Singapore, and is the earliest surgeon in Singapore to perform bilateral (both-sided) ROSA robotic total knee replacements. He is also the earliest surgeon to perform arthroscopic (keyhole surgery) double and triple hindfoot fusion surgery. With another surgeon, Dr Wee co-developed the Lasso technique of minimally invasive ankle ligament reconstruction.
He was awarded the clinical practice improvement leader for day surgery partial knee replacement at TTSH.
Dr Wee is an adjunct assistant professor at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine and was the school’s principal lead for orthopaedic surgery. He is a senior lecturer at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He is active in postgraduate medical training and is a faculty member of the NHG-AHPL orthopaedic residency programme.
He has been an invited speaker at international conferences, and an instructor at local and regional surgical courses. He has also been published in several peer-reviewed scientific journals.
