  • Symptoms of Colorectal Cancer

Symptoms and risk factors of colon cancer

Do you have the following symptoms*?:

    1. Blood in your stools
    2. Changes in your bowel habits, such as diarrhoea, constipation, a change in the consistency of your stools or if your stools are narrower than usual.
    3. Persistent abdominal discomfort, such as feeling bloated, pain, cramps, or feeling like you are unable to empty your bowels fully.
    4. Weakness or fatigue that may be accompanied by unexplained weight loss, and nausea or vomiting.

Early signs of cancer often do not include pain. The most common symptom is the lack of symptoms, that is why colorectal cancer is also known as the ‘silent killer’.

If you’re 50 years or older, don’t hesitate to get screened immediately. Early detection can save your life.

*These symptoms can also be associated with many other health conditions. You should consult a doctor to determine the cause of your symptoms.

  • Benefits & Differences of Colonoscopy & Gastroscopy

The Difference Between a Colonoscopy & Gastroscopy

    • A scope is inserted via the anus for the doctor to examine the rectum and colon
    • The procedure takes about 45 minutes, or longer if any endoscopic treatment is required
    • The procedure is painless and the patient is typically sedated
    • You will have to undergo bowel preparation and fast for around 12 hours to empty your colon and rectum for the examination
    • This is a day surgery procedure which may be claimable through your integrated shield plan

A gastroscopy can examine the oesophagus, stomach, duodenum and small intestine

    • A scope is inserted through the mouth for the doctor to examine the oesophagus, stomach, duodenum and the small intestine
    • The procedure takes about 15 minutes, or longer if any endoscopic treatment is required
    • The procedure is painless and is done either with a local anaesthetic spray or under sedation
    • You will have to fast for 6 hours to ensure your stomach is empty for the examination
    • This is a day surgery procedure which may be claimable through your integrated shield plan

    Benefits of Colonoscopy and Gastroscopy

Benefits of a Gastroscopy or Colonoscopy

The gastroscopy and colonoscopy can be used to investigate these symptoms:

    • Diarrhoea
    • Vomiting
    • Indigestion
    • Heartburn
    • Difficulty in swallowing
    • Bleeding in the stomach or bowel
    • Unexplained weight loss

Colonoscopy is also advisable for people with anaemia, and those with a strong family history of cancer of the bowel. Sometimes we take a biopsy – a small sample of the bowel and/or stomach lining - for examination in the laboratory.

A small piece of tissue is removed painlessly through the gastroscope or colonoscope. It is also possible to remove polyps through the scope. A polyp is an abnormal projection of tissue, like a wart, which the doctor will want to examine in more detail.
