Be Heart Strong Screening

  • Heart Screening

Heart conditions account for 1 in 3 deaths in Singapore every year. Many forms of heart disease can be prevented or treated if detected early. Start by knowing your risk factors and habits that may increase your chance of heart disease.

Preventive heart screening is an effective way to identify hidden heart disease risks. Be Heart Strong Screening aims to help you detect risk factors for heart disease in its early stage. The screening includes a consultation with a heart specialist who can help manage your heart health and follow up with you on the results of the screening.

  • Risk Factors

There are many risk factors associated with heart disease. Some factors you can’t control, but many you can.

    • Gender. Men are generally at greater risk of heart disease. However, women's risk increases after menopause.
    • Age. A person’s risk of developing heart disease increases with age.
    • Family history. A family history of heart disease increases your risk of heart disease.
    • High blood cholesterol. High levels of LDL cholesterol in your blood can increase the risk of cholesterol depositing within the walls of your blood vessels.
    • High blood pressure. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can result in the hardening and thickening of your arteries, narrowing the vessels through which blood flows.
    • Diabetes. Diabetes escalates the risk of developing heart disease.
    • Obesity. If you are obese, your risk of heart attack is roughly 3 times greater than a person with a healthy weight.
    • Smoking. Smokers are up to 3 times more likely to suffer heart attacks.
    • Exercise. Any form of aerobic exercise is good for the heart. Exercising also assists in weight control and the promotion of cardiovascular fitness.
    • Stress. Researchers increasingly believe that stress may be a contributory factor for heart disease. Some studies have found a significant correlation between work stress and the incidence of coronary heart disease.
  • Guidelines for Heart Screening
