Pre-participation Heart Screening

  • Heart Screening

Preparing for a race, marathon or obstacle course does not just mean training your fitness. Sudden cardiac death in those younger than 35, although rare, may occur during strenuous physical activities such as sports or a marathon. This may be due to undiscovered or overlooked heart abnormalities.

Although not foolproof, a heart screening before a race may uncover underlying heart conditions that may trigger sudden cardiac death. The pre-participation screening includes a consultation with a heart specialist who can help manage your heart health and follow up with you on the results of the screening.

  • Causes of Sudden Cardiac Death

Most often the cause of sudden cardiac death is an underlying heart condition. Conditions that can trigger sudden cardiac arrest include:

    • Coronary artery disease refers to the narrowing or obstruction of the arteries that supply blood to the heart. The narrowing of the arteries occurs due to the build-up of fatty deposits in the wall of the arteries. These fatty deposits, called plaque, accumulate over the years and can eventually block blood flow to the heart. Symptoms of coronary artery disease can include chest pain and shortness of breath (angina) during exertion or stress.
    • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a genetic heart condition and is passed on through families. This condition causes the walls of the heart muscle to thicken, making the heart muscle stiff. This makes it harder for the heart to pump blood around the body. Symptoms of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy can include chest pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, or fainting.
    • Long QT syndrome is a heart rhythm condition that can cause heart palpitations and fast, chaotic heartbeats, often leading to fainting. In some cases, the heart can beat erratically for so long that it causes sudden death.
  • Guidelines for Heart Screening

    • As fasting is required for the blood test, please abstain from food and drinks for at least 10 hours before your scheduled appointment. Sips of plain water are allowed.
    • Please bring along sports attire for cardiac evaluation purposes. This includes sports shoes and socks.
    • For your comfort and convenience at the medical examination, it is advisable to wear a 2-piece outfit.
