Latar belakang

  • Dr Tan Yu-Meng is a general surgeon practising at Mount Elizabeth Hospital and Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore. He specialises in gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary-pancreatic (liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile duct) conditions and peritoneal malignancy surgery for a rare cancer in the abdominal tissue lining. He is one of the few surgeons in Asia who performs specialised surgery for peritoneal malignancies.
  • Dr Tan graduated from the Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School (now the Imperial College School of Medicine) with first class honors and distinction in his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree in 1994. He then trained in general surgery at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) under Professor Soo Khee Chee and became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK in 1999.
  • Dr Tan underwent further training in advanced hepatobiliary surgery and liver transplantation at the world renowned Liver Unit of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, United Kingdom. He then furthered his skills in living donor liver transplantation under the guidance of Professor Koichi Tanaka in Japan.
  • Dr Tan was a founding member of the liver transplant team at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) in 2005. He was appointed as the surgical director of the liver transplantation programme at SGH in 2007 and led the team to perform the first successful split liver transplant at SGH and the first combined heart-liver transplant in Asia in 2009.
  • As the former deputy head and senior consultant of the Department of Surgical Oncology at the National Cancer Centre (NCC),Dr Tan led a multidisciplinary team to Washington Cancer Institute to adopt skills in peritonectomy and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (a heated chemotherapy treatment for abdominal cancer) from Dr Paul Sugarbaker in 2009. Dr Tan continues to be a visiting consultant to the NCC.
  • Dr Tan has published over 90 articles on various surgical diseases in leading surgical journals, such as the Annals of Surgery.
  • He was an examiner of the Royal college of Edinburgh in UK and Yong Loo Lin School of medicine at the National University of Singapore.
