Tomotherapy is a radiation technology that uses intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) to treat different tumours. It allows doctors to target the radiation beams onto the diseased tissue and spare the surrounding healthy tissue from radiation damage.
Tomotherapy uses an in-built CT scanner to confirm the size, shape and location of the tumour before the treatment is carried out. The tomotherapy unit allows customised and focused radiation beams to be delivered to the diseased areas, slice by slice, and therefore irradiating the whole tumour at one time.
