Tomotherapy

  • What is Tomotherapy?

    Tomotherapy

Tomotherapy is a radiation technology that uses intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) to treat different tumours. It allows doctors to target the radiation beams onto the diseased tissue and spare the surrounding healthy tissue from radiation damage.

Tomotherapy uses an in-built CT scanner to confirm the size, shape and location of the tumour before the treatment is carried out. The tomotherapy unit allows customised and focused radiation beams to be delivered to the diseased areas, slice by slice, and therefore irradiating the whole tumour at one time.

  • Tomotherapy can be used to treat all areas of the body because it has a complete, 360 degree range of movement. It is used to treat patients with hard-to-reach tumours including prostate, lung, head and neck cancers, which are usually positioned deep in the tissues or near important healthy tissues. It helps in the management of spinal cord cancer, lymphoma and paediatric cancer.

  • At Mount Elizabeth Hospital, we are committed to giving you comprehensive care. Our multidisciplinary team of radiation oncologists, nurses and therapists are here to guide you through the entire treatment and recovery process. Enquire to find out about the range of services we offer.
