General Paediatric Surgery

  • What is General Paediatric Surgery?

Paediatric surgery is a subspecialty of general surgery that involves surgical procedures carried out on fetuses, infants, children and adolescents. Subspecialisation within paediatric surgery include fetal surgery (performed on a fetus in the womb), neonatal surgery (performed on newborns), cardiothoracic (heart) surgery, neurology surgery (brain and nerves), urology surgery (urinary tract) and nephrology surgery (kidneys).

Paediatric surgeons use minimally invasive, laparoscopic procedures to treat conditions that need surgical involvement. General paediatric surgery needs multi-disciplinary participation from paediatric gastroenterologists (digestive system specialists), paediatric respiratory (breathing specialists) physicians, paediatric endocrinologists (hormone specialists), dietitians and speech therapists.

  • Paediatric surgery can be used to manage and treat various children’s problems and conditions that need surgical involvement. Paediatric surgeons can carry out prenatal ultrasound examination on fetuses inside the womb and work with radiologists to diagnose any fetal abnormalities. Depending on the results, they can plan corrective surgery and offer educational programmes for the parents. Paediatric surgeons can also carry out neonatal surgeries on ill or high-risk newborns and repair any life-threatening congenital birth defects.

Children might also suffer from traumatic injuries that need surgical involvement, or may be suffering from benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) tumours that need surgical care for the resection (removal) of the tumours. Other common types of paediatric surgery include ears, nose and throat (ENT) procedures including tonsil removal (tonsillectomy) and placement of tubes in the ears. Paediatric surgeons also work with other specialists to treat abnormalities of the kidney, spleen, gastrointestinal (digestive) tract, and a wide range of other paediatric surgeries.
