Holter Monitoring

  • What is Holter Monitoring?

Holter monitoring is a non-invasive diagnostic test that uses a portable device called a Holter monitor. Unlike the common electrocardiogram (ECG) that records the heart’s electrical activity for a few seconds, the Holter monitor allows the electrical activity of the heart to be recorded continuously for 24 – 48 hours. You are normally needed to carry the Holter monitor on you all the time while performing your usual daily routine, and to keep a record of your activities. The cardiologist (heart specialist) will study the readings of the Holter monitor against your physical daily activity to determine any abnormal heartbeats and disorders.

  • If you suffer from palpitations (fast, strong, or irregular heartbeats), fainting and dizziness spells, your doctor may recommend Holter monitoring to be able to correlate these symptoms to your heart rhythm. This test allows transient (temporary) rhythm disorders of the heart to be detected.

Your cardiologist may recommend Holter monitoring to study the electrical activity of your heart under normal activity or after a heart attack. It also allows the cardiologist to diagnose any heart rhythm abnormalities (including serious arrhythmias), and to monitor the effect of a new heart medicine. It is also useful for monitoring your heart rhythm after a heart procedure to see if the procedure was successful.
