  • What is Gastritis?

Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach lining. It can be either acute, with severe attacks that last for a couple of days, or it can be chronic, with long-term nausea and appetite loss. If not treated, Gastritis can result in severe complications.

  • There are many possible causes for Gastritis and these may include:

    • After surgery, burns or traumatic injury
    • Excessive alcohol consumption
    • Infection caused by Helicobacter Pylori (H. Pylori), a bacteria found in the lining of the stomach, which can weaken the protective coating and therefore result in the digestive juices reaching the stomach lining
    • Long-term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) such as aspirin and ibuprofen
    • Stress and chronic vomiting (observed in bulimia cases)
  • In the majority of cases, gastritis may not result in any symptoms. The most common symptoms of Gastritis include:

    • Black stool due to blood in the bowel actions
    • Blood in your vomit
    • Burning feeling in the upper abdomen
    • Hiccups
    • Loss of appetite
    • Nausea and indigestion
    • Pain in the upper abdomen
    • Vomiting
    • Weight loss
  • The treatment of Gastritis depends on the cause of your condition. Your doctor will assess your condition and suggest the treatments that suit you best, and these include:

    • Acid control medications to neutralise acid levels in the stomach
    • Antibiotics to kill the bacteria if you are infected with H. Pylori
    • Painkillers, such as those containing Acetaminophen
    • Anaemia
    • Dehydration
    • Kidney problems
    • Stomach Cancer
