Rezum

  • What is Rezum Water Vapour Therapy?

Rezum water vapour therapy is a minimally invasive treatment for benign prostate gland enlargement, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It uses the stored thermal energy in water vapour to treat the extra prostate tissue and reduce the size of the prostate.

Rezum relieves BPH symptoms while preserving sexual function. Most men see improvement in their symptoms within a few weeks and can return to regular activities within a few days after the treatment.

  • Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

BPH is an excess growth of prostate tissue resulting in an enlarged prostate gland. The excess prostate tissue compresses and obstructs the urethra, reducing or blocking the flow of urine out of the bladder and causing bladder, urinary tract or kidney problems.

    Symptoms of BPH include:

    • Frequent or urgent need to urinate
    • Increased frequency of urination at night
    • Difficulty with urination
    • Weak or irregular urine flow
    • Inability to completely empty the bladder
  • Several treatments are available for BPH, including medications, minimally invasive treatment and surgery. Your doctor will evaluate your condition and suggest the most appropriate treatment, depending on your symptoms, the severity of the BPH, the size of your prostate, other health conditions you might have and your preferences.

For mild to moderate symptoms, medication is usually the first form of treatment. If your symptoms are moderate to severe, minimally invasive or surgical treatment might then be recommended.

    Rezum may be recommended if:

    • You choose to discontinue or you prefer not to take long-term medications for BPH
    • You are dissatisfied with symptom relief using medication
    • You want to avoid invasive surgery or implants
    • You want a treatment with minimal risk of disturbance to sexual function

Discuss with your doctor if Rezum is a good treatment option for you based on your symptoms, health and preferences.

  • Rezum can be done as a day procedure and does not require general anaesthesia. It uses the stored thermal energy in water vapour (steam) to treat the excess prostate tissue.

During each treatment, natural water vapour is released into and throughout the targeted prostate tissue. When the water vapour is in contact with the tissue and turns back into water, all the stored energy is released, destroying the excess prostate cells. Over time, the body’s natural healing response absorbs the dead cells and shrinks the prostate. With the extra tissue removed, the urethra opens, reducing BPH symptoms. Depending on the size of the prostate, the numbers of water vapour treatments vary.

Most patients return to regular activities within a few days. Your urologist will discuss this during your consultation.
