What are antenatal classes?

Antenatal (prenatal) or parent-craft classes are designed to provide expectant mothers and fathers with detailed and thorough information to prepare for childbirth and parenthood.

Who should attend antenatal classes?

Our antenatal classes are designed for both expectant mummies and daddies. Couples and individual attendees are both welcome to attend our classes.

Are antenatal classes necessary?

Antenatal classes are beneficial, with the aim of equipping parents-to-be with the knowledge of labour, birth, breastfeeding and caring for their newborn baby.

Experienced midwives and lactation consultants will share hands-on advice on how to:

  • Cope with physical and emotional changes
  • Prepare for labour
  • Plan for successful breastfeeding
  • Take care of your newborn

When should you attend antenatal classes?

Most women attend their first class when the pregnancy is more stable, at around week 20.

What can you expect in antenatal classes?

Programme outline

Childbirth education program (2 sessions)

Session 1 – Pre and postnatal care (Zoom class)
In this session, a midwife from Mount Elizabeth Hospitals will provide tips on managing labour and caring for your newborn.

Virtual Presentation on Miracles of Birth
  • Miracle of birth
  • Elective caesarean
  • Characteristics of newborns
  • Pre and postnatal nutrition
  • Understanding breastfeeding behaviours
Session 2 – Intensive course on the care of baby and mother after delivery (face-to-face class)
In this session, a midwife from Mount Elizabeth Hospitals will provide tips on caring for the newborn and mother after delivery.This will be a group session with a maximum of 8 couples. Confinement and dietary requirements are based on Asian culture.

Newborn's Hygiene
  • Care of infant's eyes
  • Care of infant’s umbilical cord

Early Breastfeeding Initiation
  • Recommended steps for breastfeeding
  • Breastfeeding positions
  • Having a correct latch
  • When and why baby needs supplements
  • Collection of colostrum and breastmilk
Newborn's Safety
  • Burping to prevent newborn vomiting
  • Relieving newborn colic
  • Managing a choking infant of fewer than 12 months
Managing Mother's Difficulties
  • Postnatal physical changes and exercises
  • Caring of wounds
  • Understanding second-degree postpartum haemorrhage
  • Understanding emotional stages during traditional confinement
Challenges in Maintaining Breastfeeding
  • Breastfeeding 6 months and beyond returning to work
  • Breastmilk expression and milk storage
  • How to manage insufficient or oversupply of breastmilk
  • Prevention of sore nipples, engorgement, blocked ducts, and mastitis
