Many health insurance products can cover you up to a private hospital plan, which gives you the assurance to seek treatment in our facilities and recover with peace of mind. • Medishield Life & Integrated Shield Plans

With effect from 1 Nov 2015, Medishield Life replaces Medishield. If you are a Singaporean, or if you are a Permanent Resident that contributes to the Central Provident Fund (CPF), you would have Medishield Life coverage. Medishield Life serves as a national health coverage that suffices to cover an insured individual in a Class C or B2 ward in public hospitals. If you utilise your Medisave to pay for additional premiums on top of your Medishield Life, you would have purchased additional private insurance coverage, and have an ‘Integrated Shield Plan’.

An Integrated Shield Plan is provided by private insurers. It allows the insured individual to access higher coverage in a private hospital like Mount Elizabeth Hospitals. The additional coverage is an extension of everyone’s Medishield Life.

Mount Elizabeth Insurance Coverage-Integrated Shield Plan/Medishield Life

A private Integrated Shield Plan serves to provide additional coverage if you would like to seek treatment in a private hospital like Mount Elizabeth Hospital or Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital. Integrated Shield Plans are provided by Medisave-approved private insurers and these private insurers also provide a ‘Rider’ option to supplement your Integrated Shield Plan.

A rider provides further financial coverage for the compulsory cash payable portions of your Medishield Life-covered hospital bill. A rider is a monthly or annual cash premium add-on to your private Integrated Shield Plan. Having a rider means that out-of-pocket payables (deductible and co-insurance) are reimbursed when you process your claims.

If you have an Integrated Shield Plan covered for ‘Private Hospitals as Charged’ and purchase a rider, your Integrated Shield Plan allows you to claim up to 90%* or more of your Mount Elizabeth bill (as illustrated below).

MediShield Life will provide basic coverage for your pre-existing condition, even if this is excluded from the top-up coverage provided by your private insurer. What this means is that should you need treatment, you will still enjoy insurance coverage at Class B2 or Class C in the public hospitals, provided by MediShield Life. This coverage is not extended to your Integrated Shield Plan benefits. Therefore, if you are treated in a Class A ward, MediShield Life will reimburse you only the amount you would receive in a Class C / B2 ward.

      • What do I need to do if I have a company insurance and an Integrated Shield Plan

Mount Elizabeth Hospitals’ Business Office will first submit your hospital bill claim through your Integrated Shield Plan. One your claim is approved, we will process and forward the taxi invoice to your company insurance for payment.

For instance, if the total hospital bill is SGD 5,000 and your company insurance covers SGD 1,000, we will submit the hospital bill and indicate SGD 4,000 as the claim amount to be processed via your Integrated Shield Plan. Once the claim is approved, we will proceed to process the remaining SGD 1,000 to your company insurance.

      • Why do I need to wait for so long before the claim is approved?

The claim process will only start 3 days after discharge (it’s a grace period for any bill amendments). The insurer may need more time if any further enquiry on the medical report. The claims reimbursement typically takes 6 – 8 weeks after your Integrated Shield Plan's insurance provider processes the claim.

      • My insurance agent told me that when I get admitted, no payment is required. Is it true?

This would depend on your insurance coverage and its relative terms and conditions. If your health insurance has a direct billing arrangement available at Mount Elizabeth Hospitals and your hospital bill is fully covered, no payment would be required upon discharge. However, for Integrated Shield Plans, payment would be collected during admission (deposit) and upon discharge. Our hospitals’ Business Office will assist you to submit the claims and refund you once we received the payment from the insurer.

      • What if I do not have money to pay for my deposit and balance of my hospital bill upon discharge? I am covered for ‘Private Hospitals as Charged’ under my Integrated Shield Plan and I have a rider.

We would encourage you to approach our Admissions counter for an Estimated Bill Size, and request for your specialist to also provide you with his / her professional fees’ estimate. This would allow you to have a clearer picture of your potential hospital bill size and payment required during admission and discharge.

      • Why would you need to wait for my insurance provider to pay before you can refund my money?

This may be an occasion that your claim may have been approved via your insurance provider, the payment may have yet to be processed and received by our Business Office. We assure you that we will process the refund once we have received payment from them.

      • Why must wait for insurance to approve the claims before you release my final bill? I got another insurance waiting I need my final bill urgently!

The bill cannot be finalised if there are still pending claims from the insurance. We will assist in expediting the claims if urgent submission is needed.

      • What is the type of room covered by my insurance policy?

Different insurance policies would have different entitlements. A ‘Private Hospital as Charged’ Integrated Shield Plan would cover the policyholder under a standard Single Room in Mount Elizabeth Hospitals.
