With effect from 1 Nov 2015, Medishield Life replaces Medishield. If you are a Singaporean, or a Permanent Resident that contributes to the Central Provident Fund (CPF), you would have Medishield Life coverage. Medishield Life serves as a national health coverage that suffices to cover an insured individual in a Class C or B2 ward in public hospitals. If you utilise your Medisave to pay for additional premiums on top of your Medishield Life, you would have purchased additional private insurance coverage, and have an ‘Integrated Shield Plan’.
An Integrated Shield Plan is provided by private insurers. It allows the insured individual to access higher coverage in a private hospital like Mount Elizabeth Hospitals. The additional coverage is an extension of everyone’s Medishield Life.
A private Integrated Shield Plan serves to provide additional coverage if you would like to seek treatment in a private hospital like Mount Elizabeth Hospital or Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital. Integrated Shield Plans are provided by Medisave-approved private insurers and these private insurers also provide a
‘Rider’ option to supplement your Integrated Shield Plan.
A rider provides further financial coverage for the compulsory cash payable portions of your Medishield Life-covered hospital bill. A rider is a monthly or annual cash premium add-on to your private Integrated Shield Plan. Having a rider means that out-of-pocket payables (deductible and co-insurance) are reimbursed when you process your claims.
If you have an Integrated Shield Plan covered for ‘Private Hospitals as Charged’ and purchase a rider, your Integrated Shield Plan allows you to claim up to 90%* or more of your Mount Elizabeth bill (as illustrated below).
56% of Singaporeans are covered for Mount Elizabeth Hospitals1 with an Integrated Shield Plan.
