Dr Chan Ching Wan

Dr Chan Ching Wan is a general surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore.
Her specialty is in breast surgery and surgical oncology (for breast cancer). She also has special interests in oncoplastic surgery for breast cancer and breast reconstruction.
She was a former senior consultant in the division of general surgery (breast division) at the National University Hospital. She was also the cluster sub-specialty lead for breast services at the National University Health System (NUHS) and the tumour programme lead for breast oncology at the National University Cancer Institute, Singapore.
Dr Chan obtained her medical degree from the University of Edinburgh, and then returned to Singapore to pursue a surgical career. After becoming a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, she completed her PhD at the University of Bristol. She became interested in breast cancer and it was after completing her surgical training that she decided to specialise in breast surgery. She obtained the Health Manpower Development Plan award and completed her advanced training at the Nottingham Breast Institute, UK.
While at NUHS, she diagnosed and treated 120 to 150 breast cancer patients every year for 10 years. She has been practising medicine for more than 20 years.
Besides her clinical work, she is an assistant professor at the National University of Singapore’s Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.
Dr Chan has been involved in several projects which cover patterns of breast cancer, early detection of breast cancer, novel treatments for breast cancer as well as improving surgical outcomes for breast conserving surgery. Her research project includes profiling of breast cancer and its relation to prognosis. She is also involved in clinical research on the use of pulsed electromagnetic fields for killing cancer cells, and the use of an optoacoustic probe for intraoperative margin assessment.
She is widely published in the fields of breast cancer and breast surgery, and is a regular reviewer for two international journals – Tissue Engineering, and the Journal of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery.
