Minimally Invasive Surgery – Laparoscopic Surgery

  • Understanding the procedure

Minimally invasive surgery, or keyhole surgery, reduces trauma to the body caused by conventional open surgery, because the incisions made are much smaller. This efficient procedure is performed with advanced laparoscopic instruments inserted through 3 – 4 tiny buttonhole incisions. The surgeon will be able to view enhanced and detailed images of the internal organs by inserting a viewing scope through these incisions. After the procedure, the tiny incisions are stitched up, leaving minimal visible scarring.

Minimally invasive surgery can be used for diagnostic purposes and laparoscopic techniques are used in a wide range of surgeries and procedures.

Minimally invasive surgery can be conducted using robotic surgery where the surgeon controls the robot from a console. The high definition 3D camera allows a better view of the surgical area and the flexibility of the robotic hands gives the surgeon greater precision and control.

  • How you may benefit

Laparoscopic surgery offers a number of advantages over an open surgery procedure. These include:

    • Reduced bleeding, which minimises the possibility of needing a blood transfusion
    • Smaller incisions, which translates to less pain, less medication, a shorter recovery time and less post-operative scarring
    • Shorter hospital stay, often with discharge on the same day. This translates to less hospital bills and a faster return to your everyday routine
    • Reduced exposure of internal organs to external contaminants, reducing the risk of infection
  • Accessing treatment

At Mount Elizabeth Hospitals, we are committed to giving you comprehensive care. Our multidisciplinary team of surgeons, nurses and therapists are here to guide you through the entire treatment and recovery process.

Patients can benefit from Mount Elizabeth Hospitals’ advanced equipment and facilities. Minimally invasive techniques reduce trauma and scarring while improving success rates and recovery speed, while computer-aided robotic surgery allows for added precision during surgical procedures.
