Robotic Surgery

  • What is a robotic surgery?

Robotic surgery are types of surgical procedures that are done with the aid of surgical robotic systems. At Mount Elizabeth Hospitals, robotic-assisted surgery combines the skills of our surgeons with the accuracy of the da Vinci® surgical system to give patients an improved clinical outcome. By overcoming the challenges of traditional open surgery, the da Vinci® surgical system allows our surgeons better accuracy, dexterity and control, needing only 1 – 2cm cuts. Robotic surgery can be used for most conditions that are currently treated using laparoscopic/minimally invasive keyhole surgeries and is ideal for:

    • Treatment of gynaecological conditions, such as cervical and uterine cancer, uterine fibroids (non-cancerous growths on uterus), endometriosis (growth of uterus tissue on other organs), hysterectomy (removal of uterus), uterine prolapse (sagging of uterus), menorrhagia (excessive menstrual bleeding)
    • Prostate cancer removal
    • Thyroid removal
    • Surgical oncology for the removal of cancer tissue from sensitive parts of an organ or tissue

While most people are suitable candidates for the robotic da Vinci® surgery, it may not be appropriate for everyone. Your specialist will determine if you are suitable for robotic surgery. Visit our FAQ page for more information on robotic surgery.

  • The da Vinci® surgical system is a modern surgical platform that consists of an ergonomically designed surgeon's console, a patient cart with 4 articulate robotic arms, a high-performance vision system and patented EndoWrist® instruments.

Your surgeon operates the system while seated at the da Vinci® console. This enables the surgeon to perform delicate and complex operations with accuracy and dexterity using a forceps-like master control while viewing the magnified 3D images of the interior of your body.

The robotic arms are inserted through tiny surgical cuts and act as an extension of the surgeon's arm, mirroring every hand movement and enabling delicate and complex operations to be done.

  • Robotic surgeries can deliver improved patient benefits compare to traditional laparoscopic/minimally invasive keyhole surgery or open surgery. These may include:

    • Smaller cuts, which means reduced infection risk, less blood loss and minimal post-operative scarring
    • Less trauma, which may result in reduced pain, less medication and shorter recovery time
    • For many women, a hysterectomy is often followed by feelings of loss and emotional distress. Robotic surgery enables quicker physical healing so that patients can focus on emotional healing
  • At Mount Elizabeth Hospitals, we are committed to providing you with comprehensive care. Our multidisciplinary team of surgeons, nurses and therapists are here to guide you through the entire treatment and recovery process.

Mount Elizabeth Hospitals' modern equipment and facilities include minimally invasive techniques to reduce trauma and scarring while improving success rates and recovery speed.

We also have surgeons trained in computer-aided robotic surgery for added precision during surgical procedures. The da Vinci® surgical system, located at Mount Elizabeth Novena, is accessible by our skilled team of specialists from Mount Elizabeth Orchard, Mount Elizabeth Novena, Gleneagles and Parkway East hospitals.
