Drug-eluting bead transarterial chemoembolisation (DEB-TACE) is a minimally invasive treatment for liver cancer that uses tiny beads loaded with anti-cancer drugs to block the blood supply to a tumour and deliver chemotherapy directly to it. This targeted approach allows for a high concentration of drug at the tumour site, while minimising exposure to the rest of the body.
DEB-TACE is most commonly used in patients with:
It is considered a palliative treatment – not intended to cure cancer, but to control tumour growth, relieve symptoms, and potentially extend life. DEB-TACE is typically offered when surgery, ablation or systemic therapy alone is not effective or suitable.
During DEB-TACE, a small catheter is inserted into the artery in the groin and guided into the hepatic artery using real-time X-ray imaging. Drug-eluting beads – microspheres loaded with chemotherapy (commonly doxorubicin) – are injected into the blood vessel feeding the tumour. These beads both block the tumour’s blood supply and slowly release chemotherapy over time, helping to maximise the cancer-fighting effect while reducing exposure to the rest of the body.
In some cases, the interventional radiologist may block off non-target arteries leading to other organs (such as the stomach or duodenum) using tiny coils to prevent unintended damage.
DEB-TACE is a more refined version of conventional TACE and offers several clinical advantages:
For these reasons, DEB-TACE is increasingly preferred in patients who may not tolerate conventional chemoembolisation.
You may be offered DEB-TACE if:
With continued treatment, DEB-TACE has been shown to delay cancer progression and may help extend life expectancy by 1–2 years in patients with unresectable liver cancer.
DEB-TACE is not suitable for all patients. It may not be recommended if you have:
Your doctor will assess your condition, liver function, and overall health before deciding if DEB-TACE is appropriate for you.
While DEB-TACE is generally safe and well tolerated, some side effects and complications can occur.
