Background

  • Dr Jeffrey Chew is an orthopaedic surgeon who has about 20 years experience in the field. He specialises in arthritis, hip and knee joint replacements and sports injuries. He currently practises out of his clinics at Mount Elizabeth, Mount Elizabeth Novena and Parkway East Hospitals.
  • Graduating from the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Singapore (MBBS, 1989), Dr Chew underwent basic training and then completed post-graduate qualifications in Surgery (FRCS Glasgow & Edinburgh, 1994) through the Health Manpower Development Programme award. He also received his Masters of Medicine, Singapore (Surgery) that same year.
  • In 1995, he received several scholarships to conduct biomechanics research at the Mayo Clinic Biomechanics Laboratory. There, he studied patello femoral tracking on various knee designs and presented his work as a finalist for the Insall Award at the American Knee Society. He was subsequently awarded his second Health Manpower Development Programme award in 1998 to undertake a one-year clinical fellowship programme at the Adult Reconstructive Division at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Mayo Clinic, Minnesota, USA.
  • Prior to his move to private practice, Dr Chew was a consultant at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. During his tenure, he served in various committees including as the Secretary of the Organising Committee of the Singapore Orthopaedic Association Meeting in 2001 and Chairman of the Scientific Sub-Committee for the second National Healthcare Group Annual Scientific Meeting in2003.
  • Research is an area of interest for Dr Chew, and that has led to the numerous awards he has won, including the Russell Hibbs Award from the Scoliosis Research Society. In addition, together with Johnson and Johnson Medical, Dr Chew helped co-design the PFC Sigma RPF High Flex Knee prosthesis. Specially designed for the Asian population, the prosthesis allows for better range of knee flexion and higher stability. It is the only mobile bearing high flexed knee prosthesis that is currently FDA-approved. His current research interests are in patella designs and tracking as well as cartilage transplantation for arthritis.
  • Training future orthopaedic surgeons is another area of interest for Dr Chew. Not only does he frequently conduct instructional courses on hip and knee reconstruction both locally and regionally, he also regularly conducts courses for general practitioners in Singapore as well as in the region. In 2005, through the prestigious Insall Travelling Fellowship Award from the American Knee Society, he spent more than a month traveling to several prestigious medical institutions throughout USA and Canada, where he had the opportunity to teach and learn with top surgeons in the field.
  • Dr Chew is also an extensively published orthopaedic surgeon who is a regular feature on the invited speakers list at local, regional and international meetings.
  • Despite his busy schedule, Dr Chew makes time for world community efforts. In recognition of the 3-week work he did helping victims in tsunami devastated Sri Lanka, he received the Minister of Health Award.
