Dr Akhil Chopra is a medical oncologist at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore.
He specialises in the treatment of lung cancer, genitourinary cancers (including prostate, kidney and bladder), breast cancer, lymphomas, multiple myeloma and gastrointestinal cancers. He has a strong interest in immunotherapy and systemic treatment strategies across multiple tumour types.
Before joining private practice, Dr Chopra was a senior consultant in medical oncology at Johns Hopkins Singapore and Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
He graduated from the University of Delhi, India, and subsequently pursued advanced training in the USA, achieving American Board certifications in internal medicine, haematology and medical oncology. He completed his fellowship at Hahnemann University Hospital and Drexel University College of Medicine in the USA.
Dr Chopra was appointed adjunct associate professor at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. He was also the programme director of the National Healthcare Group’s medical oncology training programme.
He has extensive involvement in clinical research, having served as principal and co-investigator on numerous industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated trials. His research focuses particularly on immunotherapy in solid tumours. He is a co-author of the CheckMate 040 trial, which investigated the early use of the immune checkpoint inhibitor nivolumab in hepatocellular carcinoma and was published in The Lancet. Additionally, he co-authored a study on nivolumab in advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma, a prevalent cancer in Southeast Asia, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. His research contributions also include studies on lung, prostate and kidney cancers.
He is an active member of several professional bodies including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, European Society of Medical Oncology, Academy of Medicine, Singapore, Singapore Medical Association, and Singapore Society of Oncology.
