Dr Lai Jen Ming is a hand surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore.
An avid sportsman with an interest in strength coaching, he is familiar with the requirements of athletes in sports such as rock climbing, parkour, martial arts and weightlifting. He provides both rehabilitative and surgical treatment options for fractures of the hand, wrist, and forearm; peripheral nerve injuries and neuropathies; nail infections and deformities; other hand and wrist injuries including lacerations and crush injuries; infections of the hand, wrist and forearm; trigger finger; De Quervain tenosynovitis (‘Mummy’s thumb’); cysts, tumours, and lumps of the hand and wrist; arthritis of the fingers, hand and wrist; and sprains and other ligamentous injuries of the hand and wrist.
Dr Lai has a special interest in the use of ultrasound to improve care by incorporating it for point-of-care ultrasound diagnosis, ultrasound-guided injections and ultrasound-guided minimally invasive procedures like percutaneous trigger finger release. He also performs endoscopic procedures such as small joint/wrist arthroscopy and endoscopic nerve release.
He was previously an associate consultant in the department of hand and reconstructive microsurgery at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He also served as a consultant in Singapore General Hospital’s (SGH) department of hand and reconstructive microsurgery, while also helping on paediatric hand surgery emergency cases at KK Women’s & Children’s Hospital. He is a visiting consultant in Khoo Teck Puat Hospital’s department of orthopaedic surgery and a visiting consultant in SGH’s department of hand and reconstructive microsurgery.
Dr Lai concurrently served as a member in Woodlands Health’s department of orthopaedic surgery where he helped set up the hand surgery service, while advocating for patient safety as a member of the hospital’s quality assurance committee. During this time, he also served as chairperson/vice-chairperson of the Quality Day organising committees.
Besides his clinical work, he served as co-chairperson and faculty of the Singapore AO Masters – Fractures of the Hand & Wrist Course and continues to be involved in education as an Advanced Trauma Life Support instructor. Dr Lai also serves as a specialty board member of the chapter of hand surgeons, Academy of Medicine, Singapore (AMS), and member of the faculty of medical experts, AMS.
