Dr Bernard Lee is a pain specialist and anaesthesiologist at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital.
He provides non-surgical treatment to resolve difficult chronic and acute pains using specialised laser injections and balloon injections. The conditions he treats include neck pain, back pain, spinal conditions, slipped / herniated disc, nerve impingement, trigeminal neuralgia, shoulder pain, knee pain, sports injury, post-injury persistent pain, foot pain and generalised body aches. Dr Lee also specialises in the endoscopic laser decompression procedure, a laser treatment for back pain and nerve impingement, and he is trained in medical acupuncture.
Dr Lee was the clinical director of the chronic and interventional pain management services at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH). He was also the founder and director of Singapore’s Women’s Pain Centre at KK Women’s & Children’s Hospital.
He graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS). He underwent further training to subspecialise in pain management and was accredited as a fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine at the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetist, Australia.
At TTSH, Dr Lee established various clinical programmes (e.g. back and cancer pain) under interventional pain management, including the first intensive rehabilitative programme for difficult pain conditions, for which he was the director of the cognitive behavioural pain management programme. Together with the pain taskforce, he implemented the ‘Pain as the 5th Vital Sign’ training module within the hospital, educating doctors, nurses and allied health workers to treat pain seriously and effectively. He has more than 20 years of clinical experience.
He has trained and mentored many doctors locally and overseas, in both knowledge and skills of pain medicine.
He was a clinical lecturer at NUS and an associate professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery for the postgraduate diploma in pain medicine at the University of Santo Tomas, Philippines.
Dr Lee is an article reviewer for the ASEAN Journal of Anaesthesiology and Singapore Medical Journal on research pertaining to pain advances. In addition, he is a frequent speaker on various aspects of pain treatment in orthopaedic, neuropathic and oncological conditions at local and international meetings, and conferences.
