Dr Leong Swan Swan is a medical oncologist at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore.
Her subspecialties are in lung cancer, thyroid cancer, and head and neck cancer.
Prior to joining private practice, Dr Leong served as a senior consultant in the department of medical oncology, with experience managing different tumour types, including breast cancer, colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, oesophageal cancer, lung cancer, head and neck cancer, thyroid cancer, gynaecological cancers, sarcomas, lymphomas as well as less common cancers like mesothelioma.
She graduated from the National University of Singapore and obtained her master’s degree there. She gained membership of the Royal College of Physicians, UK. She was awarded the Health Manpower Development Plan scholarship for further training, with a special focus on thoracic oncology at the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, USA. She obtained specialist accreditation in medical oncology as well as European Society of Oncology certification. She has more than 30 years of clinical practice.
Dr Leong was involved in the various multidisciplinary tumour boards, establishing herself as a key opinion cancer specialist in lung, and head and neck cancers. She was also a visiting consultant at Changi General Hospital. She had served as director of the ambulatory treatment unit at the National Cancer Centre and as chairperson of the code blue team.
In addition to clinical work, Dr Leong was also involved in undergraduate teaching, as a clinical tutor for medical students, as well as teaching junior staff and nurses. She had also given multiple public lectures.
She is a member of the American Society of Oncology, Singapore Society of Oncology, and International Association of the Study of Lung Cancer. She has also served in the bylaws committee and as auditor of the Society of Geriatric Oncology. She was involved in setting up and running the Singapore Lung Cancer Consortium.
Her research interests are mainly in lung cancer, and head and neck cancer. She was actively involved in clinical and translational research in many investigator-initiated and multi-centre industry-sponsored trials. These included trials that led to the approval of various targeted therapy drugs. She was the principal investigator for more than 10 clinical trials for cancer drug development.
Dr Leong has published in both local and International journals, including Journal of Clinical Oncology, Chest, Cancer, and has written book chapters for the staging and treatment of lung cancer. She has also been a reviewer for several journals, including Journal of Clinical Oncology, Respirology, and Singapore Medical Journal.
