Dr Toh Khai Lee is an urologist at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore.
His special areas of interests in urology include reconstructive urology, urodynamics and voiding dysfunction. He also treats urinary stone diseases and urological cancers including kidney, bladder and prostate cancers using minimally invasive surgical techniques – endourology, laparoscopy and robotic surgery. He treats females with urinary leakage including stress incontinence and urge incontinence.
Prior to joining private practice, he was a senior consultant and head of the department of urology at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
Dr Toh graduated from the National University of Singapore and gained membership at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK and the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow, UK. He received his urological training in Singapore and underwent further subspecialty training in the USA where he completed two fellowships – one at Duke University and the other at William Beaumont Hospital, USA. He is a fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. He is a gazetted kidney transplant surgeon in Singapore.
He was the earliest to use Botox to control urinary leakage in patients with spinal cord injuries. In addition, he has directed courses and instructed in urodynamics, which deals with the functions of the bladder and urethra. He is recognised as an expert in surgery involving the urethra as well as reconstructive surgery of the bladder and ureters affected by trauma or disease.
Dr Toh was the institutional principal investigator in global multi-centre clinical research trials and was a reviewer for five urological journals. He was invited to speak and demonstrate surgery in Beijing, Hong Kong, Taipei, Dhaka, Ho Chi Minh City, Yogyakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Sibu and Johor.
He was a past president of the Singapore Urological Association. He was the scientific chairman of Urofair 2004 and organising chairman of Urofair 2010. In the Urological Association of Asia, he was a member of the executive committee, serving as the honorary treasurer. Dr Toh served as a board member of the chapter of urology, College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the examinations committee for urology residents advisory committee.
At Mount Elizabeth Hospital, he was the chairman of the hospital’s quality assurance committee. Currently, he is the chairman of Mount Elizabeth Hospital’s medical advisory board.
Despite his busy schedule, Dr Toh found time to serve in humanitarian medical missions in Indonesia, Laos, East Timor and Nepal. He has also volunteered in disaster relief in Aceh, Indonesia following the tsunami, in Yogyakarta, Indonesia and in Pakistan after earthquakes. For his services, he was awarded the Unsung Heros Award by the Rotary Club.
In addition, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he served in the Community Care Facility @ Singapore Expo. He also attended to COVID-19 patients at Mount Elizabeth Hospital. For his efforts, he was awarded the COVID-19 Resilience Medal.
