How it works
During an LDCT scan, the patient lies on a motorised table that slides through a circular opening of the CT scanner. The scanner rotates around the patient, capturing multiple cross-sectional images of the lungs. These images are then reconstructed by a computer to provide detailed visuals, enabling the detection of abnormalities like nodules or tumours.
Differences between LDCT and CT scan
Purpose: While standard CT scans are often used for diagnostic purposes across various body regions, LDCT scans are specifically designed for screening, particularly for early detection of lung cancer in high-risk populations.
Radiation exposure: LDCT scans use approximately one-fifth of the radiation dose of standard CT scans, reducing potential risks associated with radiation exposure.

Why do you need a low-dose CT scan?
LDCT scans are primarily recommended for:

What can you expect in a low-dose CT scan?
The entire procedure typically takes about 10 – 15 minutes, with the actual scanning lasting only a few seconds.
Before the procedure
You may be asked to sign a consent form. You'll lie on your back on the CT table, and straps or pillows may be used to help maintain the correct position.
During the procedure
You may be instructed to hold your breath for a few seconds to ensure clear images. The table will move through the scanner as it captures images. The process is painless and non-invasive.
After the procedure
You can typically return to your normal activities immediately. A radiologist will analyse the images and send a report to your referring doctor, who will discuss the findings with you.
Side effects: LDCT scans are generally safe with no immediate side effects. However, if contrast material is used (rare for LDCT), there may be a risk of allergic reactions.
